Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) established golf programs to open doors to a sport that had long been inaccessible to Black athletes. Despite significant financial and structural hurdles, HBCU golf teams persisted, building a proud tradition of achievement.
Champions and Trailblazers
Legendary figures like Coach Eddie Payton of Jackson State, who led his teams to nearly 40 conference titles, exemplify this legacy. In 1995, Jackson State made history as the first HBCU to qualify for the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, proving that Black golfers belong on the sport's biggest stages.
Today, new champions are emerging. Howard University’s revitalized program, fueled by community support, has quickly become a powerhouse, winning conference titles and producing elite players. Recent breakthroughs, like the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff winning its first national HBCU golf title in 2025, highlight the ongoing success and bright future of these programs.
