Leadership in HBCU Golf: On and Off the Course
Share
Leadership in HBCU golf isn’t just about winning—it’s about building. At Iron Kings Golf, we see it as building teams, access, and a culture in a sport that hasn’t always made room. Across the country, dedicated coaches and administrators at Historically Black Colleges and Universities are leading that charge, shaping a generation of student-athletes and creating new standards for excellence.
Building Legacy from the Ground Up
At Livingstone College, Coach Andre Springs exemplifies this spirit. He took a dormant program and led it to one of its most successful seasons, finishing fifth at the NCAA Division II Championships. We believe this is leadership rooted in legacy, built on the core values of discipline, pride, and preparation that echo far beyond the fairway.
Creating Pipelines and Visibility
Leaders like Kortland Ware, now at Prairie View A&M, are making national headlines by building something bigger than just a team. They are creating a vital pipeline for Black athletes to thrive in a sport that still lacks representation. It’s this dedication to visibility that fuels the entire HBCU golf movement and inspires future generations.
Pushing for Equity and Recognition
Coach Leonard Smoot Jr. of Miles College shows that leadership extends beyond the course. As President of the Black College Golf Coaches Association, he pushes for better funding and national recognition for all HBCU golf programs. In our view, this fight for equity is just as important as any championship title won on the green.
Honoring a Championship Tradition
This modern leadership continues a powerful tradition shaped by figures like the legendary Eddie Payton. Leading Jackson State to 23 SWAC titles, he didn’t just win—he fundamentally changed what was possible. His work proved that Black programs could compete with anyone, mentoring hundreds of athletes and setting an enduring standard for greatness.
This legacy of leadership—past and present—inspires everything we do at HBCU Golf.
When we design our hats and gear, we’re not just making apparel. We’re honoring these leaders. We're celebrating the athletes who wear their HBCU pride with every swing. Our HBCU Golf Hats are made to reflect that spirit: bold, proud, and rooted in history.
